Our vision is to build stronger, healthier communities by mobilizing former professional basketball players to serve where the need is greatest. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit chapter of the Legends of Basketball New York Chapter is committed to delivering meaningful, community-driven impact across New York City and beyond. We envision a city where legends actively support youth, families, and underserved neighborhoods through hands-on service, mentorship, and trusted partnerships.
We believe lasting impact comes from showing up—providing resources, guidance, and hope while using the power of basketball to open doors, unite communities, and create real opportunity beyond the game.
history of the legends of basketball, new york chapter
The Legends of Basketball New York Chapter is rooted in the national organization's very foundation, established in New York City in 1992 by legends such as Dave DeBusschere and Oscar Robertson. For two decades, the city served as the association's global headquarters before the central offices moved to Chicago in 2012. Since then, the NYC Chapter has evolved into a powerhouse for local grassroots engagement, led by Chapter President and former Knick Tom Hoover.
Today, the chapter is defined by its deep community ties and consistent service across the five boroughs. Its hallmark initiatives include a long-standing weekly food pantry partnership at Ascension Church and a decade-old annual Thanksgiving turkey drive that supports hundreds of local families. Beyond food security, the chapter remains active in youth development through "Full Court Press" basketball clinics and modern educational workshops, ensuring that the legacy of retired NBA, WNBA, and Harlem Globetrotters continues to impact the city.
